CRA Is Going Paperless: What Canadian Business Owners Should Know
Effective October 2024, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will be transitioning some of its business-related correspondence to digital-only delivery. This means certain notices will no longer arrive by mail and will instead be sent directly to your CRA My Business Account.
If you're used to receiving paper letters, this shift could catch you off guard — especially if you're not checking your online account regularly.
What's New?
The CRA will stop mailing certain documents — including assessments, installment notifications, and information requests — to incorporated businesses.
Instead, these documents will now appear exclusively in your CRA My Business Account portal. While you'll get an email alert (if your account has a registered email), no physical copies will be sent.
Why This Matters
To avoid missing important updates, you must routinely log in to your CRA business account.
Failure to do so could result in:
Missed deadlines
Late filing penalties
Interest charges on unpaid balances
Overlooked requests related to GST/HST, payroll, or corporate taxes
And here’s a key detail: even if your accountant has online access to your CRA account, they won’t receive email notifications on your behalf. That means it’s still your responsibility to stay in the loop.
How to Stay Ahead
Here’s what you should do now:
Log in to your CRA My Business Account and confirm your email address is up-to-date.
Set a monthly reminder to check your online inbox for new CRA messages.
Review and update your authorized representatives to make sure the right people have access.

Note: If you haven’t registered for a CRA My Business Account yet, you’ll need to do this directly through the CRA website. Since identity verification is involved, your accountant or bookkeeper can’t do this part for you.
